Presentation at Interviews

This weeks blog comes from one of our Senior Recruitment Consultants, Barbara Clark, discussing how people should dress for their job interviews.

You don't need a high-end designer outfit for your next interview, although I am strong believer in first impressions count. You can't go back from here so make the most of your first shot at dressing smart and appropriately for the job you are being interviewed for. Before spending more money on a complete new outfit, check your wardrobe first you may just need a different pair of shoes, a tie, or some basic accessories to lift your interview attire.

Make sure you have your personal hygiene and grooming sorted - don't turn up stinky, scruffy or messy. You’re competing with other people who you will be compared too. This includes strong-smelling perfume which can be over powering. Keep it neat, simple and tidy.

I have wardrobe dilemmas nearly every morning, being a single mum. I'm always thinking of 10 things at any one time. Be organised by preparing the night before and be generous in your time to get ready. If you're stuck for ideas about what to wear my advice is to research about the company, it's culture and environment dynamics. Ask for help or tips from your recruitment consultant and they can give you more information about the company your are interviewing for.

Here are some suggestions:

Females,
• Watch the heels as too high could increase your chances of falling or tripping
• Keep your outfit simple - best not to wear the multi-fluorescent colour dress
• Don't over use your perfume or your make-up
• Leave the big chunky jewelry for the weekend.
• To Nail polish or not to nail polish - chipped nail polish is a big no!

Males,
• Best to aim for a sleek simple colour tie - nothing too outrageous
• Sharp and clean style shirt and suit to impress.
• Polish your shoes as a nice shine goes a long way
• Clean hands and nails.

Feel good, confident and make sure you are comfortable as this will bring the best of you in the interview.
