How to write your resignation letter

Thanks to Gemma Pritchard in our Waikato branch, here is some very sound advice for what to put in your resignation letter when that time comes.

Whilst it may be tempting to say “I quit!” in a letter of resignation, it’s best not to. You’ll be remembered for the way you end your employment, so it’s best to do it on as positive a note as possible. Here are some “do’s” for crafting a resignation letter that covers all the bases:

  1. Make sure to include the essentials. Address your letter to the correct person, and be sure to include the date of your last day of work.
  2. Keep it positive. Thank your employer for the opportunity, and try to name a couple of things you will take away from your time with them.
  3. If you do have something negative to say – do not put it in your letter. Seek out a verbal exit interview.
  4. Be sure to thank your employer. They’ve paid your wages and given you an opportunity to learn new skills and gain valuable experience
  5. Don’t burn your bridges. You could well need to call upon your previous employer to act as a referee for you.
  6. To be really safe – use a standard resignation letter template. There are plenty around, have a look on seek.co.nz
